The Fairfield Lady Eagles allowed 22 points in the week. The points allowed were scored by only one team, as Fairfield pitched the ever-so-rare shutout in high school basketball. Fairfield, the state’s top team in Class 3A, continues to hold a solid lead in the district standings.
The week opened in Teague with the Lady Lions trying to gain a foothold on the standings. They had upset the Mexia Ladycats in the first set of district games but they would struggle against the Lady Eagle smothering defense.
Teague began the game with a zone defense and jumped out to a slight lead, scoring seven points in the first four minutes. That is all they would score for the remainder of the half. Fairfield got three pointers from Jimilyah Nash and Kaylee Williams to draw even. Williams would add another from long distance for eight points in the period. McKinna Brackens score five in the period and her tremendous passing set up some easy scores and Fairfield led 20-7.
Avery Thaler score 10 of her 14 in the first half and the Lady Eagles did not allow a point in the period (19-0) and led 39-7 at the half.
There was a point in which four Lady Eagles (Thaler, Nash, McKinna Brackens, Shadasia Brackens) were ahead or within three of the Lady Lions total through the third period and the lead stretched to 59-13 on the way to a 72-22 win.
Nash led all scorers with 16 points followed by Shadasia Brackens with 15, McKinna Brackens and Thaler with 14 each.
Fairfield would find an easy win when they hosted the Buffalo Lady Bison on Friday night. After 32 minutes of basketball, the Bison could not muster a point and Fairfield won 78-0. Thaler scored 11 of her game high 19 in the first period and Shadasia and McKinna Brackens combined for 15 and the Lady Eagles led 39-0 after the first period.
Thaler finished with 19 and freshman guard Blayke Brackens scored 10 in the shutout win.
Fairfield travels to Groesbeck on Tuesday and will host Franklin on Friday as they continue district play.
