Several regions across Texas face the coldest temperatures they’ve had in decades, thanks to an arctic chill sweeping through the state. Although many areas have already seen frozen streets and trees, individuals can expect the icing to intensify with temperatures forecasted to drop to single digits in the coming days.

This frigid weather poses a threat to homeowners, as heavy ice increases the risk of falling branches, broken irrigation pipes, water lines and roof damage. Consumers will soon begin searching for experts who can help them repair roofs and clean up landscaping. Unfortunately, untrustworthy contractors may pose a threat to homeowners as well as the weather.

Illegitimate contractors and landscapers, known as “storm chasers,” often travel to towns recently affected by severe weather and go door to door offering their services. Some will offer a free inspection for an entire neighborhood.  After taking payment, the storm chasers leave without finishing, or sometimes without starting, the project.
If you’re looking to hire a landscaper to help your trees recover from a deep freeze or a roofing company to inspect and repair your roof, use these tips from your Better Business Bureau to find a trustworthy professional:

–Contact your insurance company first. If you believe you have damage to your property, contact your insurance company first. Many insurance companies offer free inspections to assess any damage.

–Recognize warning signs. Be wary of door-to-door salespeople offering free inspections and price cuts for paying in full or “today only” specials. Avoid hiring anyone who pressures you to make a hasty decision.

–Do your research.  Use BBB.org to find licensed and BBB Accredited professionals near you.

–Understand pricing and scope of work. Before signing any agreements, be sure to get the final price and description of services in writing, including the completion date.
