Do you love dogs, disc, dancing and distance?
These four ‘D’s’ join to make Disc Dogs, coming to Fairfield, Texas May 9-10, 2020 for their State Tournament out on Les Hayes Soccer Field.
Charles ‘Chaz’ King, a disc dog competitor, took time out of his schedule to explain what Disc Dogs is, and what to expect to see when visiting the State Tournament.
Many dogs love chasing, catching and playing fetch with a disc, and a sport evolved around this fun doggie exercise.
There are even special made disc for the dogs that are easier for them to grip in their mouth and less likely to be damaged by their teeth.
“What we’re bringing to Fairfield is called the Texas State Championship and has been going on in Texas for at least 15 or 20 years, “King stated.
The State Tournament had been held in Houston, Dallas or Austin in the past, but Fairfield was picked due to the central location the city offers.
Disc Dog is an International Sport with World Championships hosted internationally.
This State Tournament is a qualifier for the Nationals that will be held in California
A team consists of a dog and their handler, but many handlers have two or even three dogs that compete.
Dogs are required to be healthy and up to date on all vaccines but breed and size are not important, “A lot of mutts do really well in disc dog,” explains King.
There is even a micro category for smaller dogs like whippets and mini Aussies.
There are a variety of events such as Freestyle – which is a form of dance, Distance – seeing how far and fast the team can throw/catch, and a variety of other categories that are not as commonly seen.
Disc Dog has different leagues, and this tournament will include two of those leagues, Skyhoundz and UFO, with each league having an entire day to compete.
Feel free to come and spectate though just bring an ice chest, picnic, shade, EZ up tent, be prepared to sit and watch for a few hours.
They start each day with freestyle routines, move to distance, and then repeat.
King mentioned that this is not a fast sport, but rather “It can take all day to get through, you know, a competition day. It is kinda like baseball but even slower.”
Anyone interested can try it out during the novice category and the current plan is to award novice awards right away, so nobody needs to stay all day.
