The Tourism / Visitor Center has been reinstated with a unanimous vote by Fairfield City Council members present during the Tuesday, May 28, 2019 meeting.

This reverses an act of the previous council, who voted in March to put a hold on Hotel / Motel funding budgeted for the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber’s building at 900 W. Commerce had operated as the City’s visitor center since the mid-90’s and Chamber members had worked closely with the City in planning, organizing and supplying volunteers for several annual events. Funding was made retroaction to April 3, 2019 to coincide with what would have been the Chamber’s second quarterly payment from the City of Fairfield.

A change in the garbage routes by Waste Connections was approved in an effort to consolidate for efficiency. Currently, garbage is picked up three days a week. Waste Connections sought to eliminate the Wednesday pick up but to add new dumpster rental services so that no residues are left behind.

With Commerce Street being the dividing line, those living South would have a Monday pick up, and those living North a pick up on Thursday. Customers will be receiving notification from Waste Connections. The change is expected to be initiated in August. Those with smart phones are encouraged to download the WasteConnect app. Customers may view your garbage and recycling schedule and receive collection notifications from Waste Connections, all from their mobile devices.

A road bond from ETC Katy Pipeline was approved for portions of County Roads 946 and 940 that are situated inside Fairfield city limits. Once their project has completed, Public Works will inspect the roads and invoice the company for any needed repairs. Representatives of Siddons-Martin attended to answer questions about additional costs in repairing the city’s ladder truck at Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department. The submitted invoice was $5,746.84 above the budgeted amount.

Once the Council was satisfied that the repairs were legitimate and needed, Mayor Kenny Hughes asked for another invoice, detailing the additional items before final payment was approved. On the recommendation of Donna Bulger, Municipal Court Clerk, Council approved the selection of McCreary, Velska, Bragg and Allen PC for collection services. The company was one of two providers that were scored by a committee comprised by Bulger, the Municipal Judge, and the City Administrator. Also approved during the meeting was a Request For Proposal (RFP) for website hosting / maintenance services.

Following a quick Executive Session, Council voted to approve the hiring of Kelly Armstrong as Dispatcher for the City of Fairfield Police Department at the rate of $10 per hour. Councilman Landis Bayless was elected to serve as President Pro Tempore, to preside over meetings in the absence of the Mayor. Present for the meeting were Mayor Kenneth Hughes, Council members: James Tyus (Place 1), Bobby Nichols (Place 3), Landis Bayless (Place 4), and David Steward (Place 5). Councilman Randy Johnson (Place 2) was not in attendance, and City Administrator Nate Smith was out on vacation.

Fairfield has a Special Called Meeting on Wednesday, June 5th with only one item for discussion and possible action: to reconsider the decision of April 23rd regarding the employment of Ronald Corley. During that meeting, Council had voted to a five-day suspension with Corley being eligible to return to work on May 1st.
