Dear Editor,
Much is seen these days in national media about the crisis at our southern border; the coverage is usually disparaged as “overblown” or “fake news” by liberal progressives. This is not true. There exists a growing problem, and it will become tragically worse if not corrected. The penalty for illegally entering Mexican territory is several years’ imprisonment in a Mexican jail. The socialist government of Mexico turns a blind eye to these immigrants since it knows that Mexico won’t be responsible for their future welfare (they aren’t staying). These people are not fleeing repressive government tyranny; they flee poverty and seek the sweet life in the U.S. – just as Europe has been invaded by middle easterners who don’t stop at Greece, Albania, or other poor nations; they want to reach Germany, France, and the U.K. where welfare is richest.
In 1938 the U.S. immigrant quota for German and Austrians seeking visas to American 27,480 per year. In 1939 the S.S. St. Louis sailed from Germany with Jews collected from concentration and internment camps en route to the west in order so as to offload them to other countries; it was a propaganda stunt that worked for the Nazis; none of the countries visited would accept the passengers. The U.S. Coast Guard prevented the ship from docking at any U. S. port, and the ship returned the passengers to Germany. Those passengers were seeking life instead of death; the migrants coming here are seeking prosperity instead of poverty. There is a world of difference.
The current policy of detain, process, and release on the streets these migrants who knew they would be breaking the law is an insanity promoted by the democratic/liberal left. America is not a vague place such as Arabia or the Amazon. We have finite borders defined by laws enacted by the people with specific rules for who is eligible to come into the country and who is not. These liberals are aided and abetted by leftist federal judges (mostly from California) who issue injunctions against enforcing the law.
If France and Germany had not ended their “open border” policies two years ago, they would have become Muslin states; if we do not stop our “open border” fiasco, America will be unrecognizable in a generation. It should be fixed by whatever means required. A forceful solution at the southern border would be best. Trump’s proposal to deposit these people into liberal sanctuary cities would likely meet with the same responses there as the passengers of the St. Louis did in 1939.
