March was a good month at the Fairfield Library. An out-of-town visitor recently stopped and commented about how great our little library is. We never get tired of hearing compliments! We want to take this opportunity to thank you, our patrons, for responding so generously to our request for recent and current magazines issues. Our patrons are fantastic and we appreciate the contributions and ask that you keep it up!
March saw the completion of the semi-annual book sale and it was a great success. The objective was to raise enough money to purchase a laminator for staff and pubic use. We are pleased to say that the laminator is here, and available for our staff to process your needs for a modest fee, depending on size of your project. It will handle small pieces (business card size) or larger projects up to menu size (11 ½” x 17 ½”). The next book sale will be in late summer or fall time frame.
The Fairfield Library Association conducted the annual public meeting on March 21st. A review of accomplishments for 2018 were presented by board president, Scott Mills and Library Director, Gary Wiggins. Our great volunteers and Friends of the Fairfield Library were recognized and thanked for their contribution to our success in providing library services to our community.
March 29th also was the night of a phenomenal turnout for our quarterly Family Game Night which featured Bingo. Fifty-seven adults and children came out to enjoy the fun and prizes for winning bingos! Small children were able to play at the Lego table and the computers in the children’s area. A poll of everyone at the end of the evening showed a desire to do it again, so the next game night will be a repeat performance of BINGO.
March was a time of transition in our Story Time events. We were saddened when Mrs. Mary King had a great opportunity for full time employment with the Freestone Navarro County Educational Co-op. We were blessed to have an immediate replacement with another energetic Children and Teen Program Coordinator, Mrs. Lela Erwin. Lela, an avid reader, loves “all things library,” and says that she is pleased to join the wonderful team at the Fairfield Library, looking forward to serving our patrons!
April plans include Story Time every Wednesday at 10:00. Mrs. Lela has planned the next weeks of books and crafts to include: 04/10 There Are No Bears in This Bakery; 04/17 Turkey’s Eggcellent Easter ***Easter Egg Hunt at the Library!!!!!; 04/24 Teddy Bear’s Birthday Bash ***Guest Reader Courtney Taylor, author!!! Mrs. Taylor will have books available for purchase. Mrs. Lela is busily working on plans for the Summer Reading Program and more information will be coming next month.
The Adult Technology Class is a continuation of EXCEL training and will be conducted by Director Gary Wiggins on Tuesday, April 16th. Please call or come by to reserve your seat at a computer. Further out in our planned community events is a technology session on Tuesday, June 18th at 5:30. Ana Krahmer with the University of North Texas Digital Newspaper Unit will be speaking. Ana will share how to utilize the Portal to Texas History website to access Freestone County newspapers that were recently added to the collection through the Tocker Grant. Genealogists and all interested in Freestone County history will want to put this event on their calendars.
