This week, Republican State Senator Charles Schwertner filed for reelection to Texas Senate District 5. The candidate-filing period for the 2018 election began on November 11th and ends December 11th. Schwertner has served in the Texas Senate since 2013 and previously served in the Texas House of Representatives.
“Today I am honored to file for reelection to the Texas Senate,” said Schwertner. “It’s a great honor to represent the people of District 5, and I am very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. There is more work to be done, and I look forward to continuing the fight for our communities and our conservative values.”
In the Texas Senate, Schwertner has focused on securing the border, lowering business and property taxes, improving public and higher education, protecting private property owners from eminent domain abuse, funding the state’s 50-year water plan, defending the unborn and leading the fight against Obamacare and Medicaid expansion.
Additionally, Schwertner has fought to protect Texas children by improving the state’s Child Protective Services (CPS) agency. Last session he authored and passed legislation that made major reforms to CPS, earning praise from Governor Abbott who had made CPS reform a top priority.
Schwertner also co-authored the state ban on sanctuary cities, and authored and passed landmark legislation that prohibits the harvesting and selling of fetal tissue. For his efforts to protect the unborn, Schwertner was named a “Pro-Life Hero” by Texas Right to Life.
Schwertner comes from six generations of farming and ranching in Texas. In addition to his role in the Texas Legislature, Schwertner is a practicing orthopedic surgeon, treating thousands of patients in Senate District 5 each year. Senate District 5 includes Brazos, Freestone, Grimes, Leon, Limestone, Madison, Milam, Robertson, Walker, and Williamson counties.
