In 1868 a group of ladies led by Mariah Lee, wife of a school teacher in the area, began conducting prayer meetings in private homes. In 1872 J.M. Gambrell, a missionary, visited the community.
Pastor Gambrell convinced the prayer group to form a church. The church was formally organized in August, 1872 under the name Little Hope Baptist Church with Gambrell as their pastor. The organization of the church took place under a large oak tree a few yards from the present sanctuary.
The name Little Hope was later changed to New Hope Baptist Church. Today we are as dedicated to sharing and spreading the gospel as in the beginning.
Sunday, October 8th, 2017 will be the celebration/anniversary of 145 yrs. of the organization of New Hope Baptist Church in St. Elmo, Texas.
Currently we are seeking former pastors, staff, members and their families and everyone who has been associated with New Hope that would like to attend our celebration.
We invite you and anyone who knows someone with a former association to please contact our current pastor, Dr. Elton McCann, at 903-353-8863 or email him at semdoc@juno.com or contact Wanda Blake at 903-530-8812 or email to tomandwanda1@windstream.net.
