The Fairfield Invitational Basketball Tournament takes over the headlines this weekend as several area teams vie for the championship trophy and the local crowd should witness some great area basketball.

The girls’ tournament features the Fairfield Lady Eagles, the defending state finalist and top ten team. Their season has ended at the Alamodome the last four seasons and, with two Division I athletes graduating off that team, the new look Eagles will look to new leadership on the court. They return Sally Whitaker to the sideline as she sets a new team to the same success and expectations as previous years. It could be more challenging, but it will certainly have the talent to succeed under her leadership.

Breckenridge returns for their second trip to Freestone County to play in the Fairfield Invitational and were a playoff team and will enter in Pool A of the tournament. Mount Vernon and Waco Connally will compete in the same pool to open tournament play.

Madisonville and Teague will compete in Pool B of the tournament and will open the tournament as the opening game in the Maroon Gym at the Johnson Activity Center. Covenant Christian will also play in this same pool.

Mexia and China Spring will fill out the tournament in Pool C and will face off in the opening game in the Gold Competition Gym at the Johnson Activity Center. Neches returns to the tournament and will fill out Pool C.

The pool winners will fill out a gold and silver bracket for the tournament hardware at the conclusion of Saturdays play.

The boy’s tournament will play for the best record in a straight pool play method. The Fairfield Eagles were a playoff team last season and welcome back head coach Donte Wilson. Coach Wilson enters his second season as the Eagles head coach and his second stint at Fairfield ISD, leading them to the playoffs when he was at the school previously.

Azle, Grapeland, and Waco Connally have been previous competitors at the Fairfield Invitational and will return to the Johnson Activity Center to play for the tournament title. The Magnolia Bulldogs will complete the field in the tournament for the boys’ tournament.

Tournament play begins Thursday, December 7th at both gyms located at the Johnson Activity Center. Play will continue on Friday through the early part of the afternoon on Saturday. Tournament Passes and single game tickets are available, and concessions will be ready to be consumed all three days.
