The Palestine Dogwood Chapter 991 of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and Associates of the Vietnam Veterans of America (AVVA) are pleased to announce the selection of five recipients of scholarships for the Fall 2020 semester. The awards are being presented to High School students from Palestine, Elkhart, Slocum, Westwood, and Buffalo.  The student receiving an award from the Buffalo High School was Landon R. Folsom.


Landon received the Stephen A. Severn Memorial Scholarship Award. He graduated from Buffalo High School, and will attend Sam Houston State University. He plans on majoring in Geology. His future plans are to become an Onsite Drilling Rig Geologist. He is the son of Ms. Alicia Folsom and Terry Folsom of Buffalo, and the Grandson of Ronny Wier, of Palestine. Mr. Wier is an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. The award is made in honor of the late Stephen A. Severn, of Palestine. Mr. Severn was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of Chapter 991.


The VVA and AVVA Chapter 991award scholarships twice a year in the Spring and Fall for upcoming semesters.  The program includes multiple awards of up to $1,000 made each school semester to students from the seven county area serviced by Chapter 991. The primary qualifying criterion for award is that the Applicant must have a Vietnam War Veteran or a Vietnam War Era Veteran in the family who is living, or lived in the seven counties served by Chapter 991 while alive.
