Two Freestone County males were arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon following a shooting incident that occurred in Teague on Friday, June 22, 2017.
According to an affidavit by Lieutenant Clayton Aldrich of the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office, he was contacted around 9:30 p.m. that evening by Lieutenant Robert Willis, of the same office, about a person that had possibly been shot who was in the Emergency Room at Freestone Medical Center in Fairfield, both were determined to have License to Shoot.
Lt. Willis explained to Lt. Aldrich that he had interviewed numerous witnesses, and that they had identified the two males responsible for the shooting. Those named were 21-year-old Michael Stamper, Jr. of Fairfield and a 16-year-old white male from Teague.
At this point, warrants were issued by Judge Theresa Farris for the arrest of the two accused.
Stamper was arrested, booked into the Freestone County Jail, and is now out on a $30,000 bond. The minor was taken to Limestone County Juvenile Detention Center.
Two witnesses, both 17, state that it all began when Stamper and the minor wanted to meet with other young men to settle a disagreement.
After some back and forth communication, the young men in two trucks, agreed to follow Stamper and the minor, in another truck, down FCR 868 toward FM 80, across the railroad tracks, and down a back road before stopping.
When they stopped, all the males in the two trucks walked up to stand in front of the first truck.
The witnesses say that all of a sudden, Stamper and the minor jumped out of Stamper’s truck and started shooting at them, at which point, they all ran to take cover. Once the shooting stopped, Stamper and the minor got back in Stamper’s truck and sped off.
A male with the group of young men sustained an injury to his leg and was bleeding, so they decided to take him to the hospital.
One witness explains that the first of the two vehicles was hit by several bullets, that smoke was coming from the radiator, and it would not start. They decided to pile into the second vehicle to get their friend to the emergency room.
According to law enforcement, it is believed that the young man was hit by flying debris after one bullet came through the grill and into the cab of the truck.
Due to the fact that most of the males involved in this incident are minors, legally, law enforcement is unable to disclose names or more details of this event. But according to Sheriff Jeremy Shipley, they are doing everything to make sure this does not escalate.
