Graveside services for W. R. McSwane, 78, were held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Salem Cemetery near Freestone. Bro. Darrel Beggs officiated.
Cam McSwane, Martin Black, Scott Holmes, Doug Brown, Robert Eubanks, and Olen Clary served as pallbearers.
Mr. McSwane passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at his residence near Freestone.
He was born in Teague on February 15, 1938, and graduated from Teague High School with the class of 1956. W.R. married Fredrica on August 5, 1957, and shared almost fifty-nine years of marriage together. After spending a year in college at Navarro, he moved south and went to work in the oil fields. W.R. had many different jobs and careers in numerous professions including working in oil fields, farming, work as a certified engineer, raised hogs and cattle, did concrete and roofing work, and worked as a cowboy, riding horses & working dogs through the Mesquite fields of Caldwell County. He returned to Freestone County for good in 1974. He and Fredrica operated a peach orchard and W.R. was elected Freestone County Commissioner for Pct 2 and served from 1978 until his retirement in January 2003. Mr. McSwane was baptized early in life at the Freestone Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Fredrica McSwane, two sons, Marshall McSwane & wife Nancy and Will McSwane & wife Kathy, all of Freestone; four granddaughters, Vicky McSwane of Dallas, Marsha Black & husband Martin of Burleson Hill, Georgiana McSwane of Midland, and Maysel McSwane of College Station; one grandson, Campbell Roger McSwane of Freestone; two great-granddaughters, Emery Black and Parker Black; one sister, Wanda Burks & husband Rufus of Freestone; one brother, Jerry McSwane & wife Myrtle of Fairfield; numerous nieces, nephews, special cousins, and friends.
Mr. McSwane was preceded in death by his parents, Alden & Cora McSwane.
The family requests memorials be made to the Freestone Community Center, 739 F.M. 80 South, Donie, Texas 75838, or to the Teague Public Library, 400 Main Street, Teague, Texas 75860.
