The National Honor Society (NHS) is excited to announce that Mika-Lyn Gargis, a senior at Wortham High School and member of NHS, has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist. Gargis will receive a $3200 scholarship toward higher education. This is the second year in a row that Wortham High School has had a semifinalist for the NHS Scholarship!
Since 1946, more than $21 million in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding NHS senior members to support college access and student success. The scholarship program is supported by the parent organization of NHS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
In the 100+ years since NHS was founded in 1921, members have been making a difference in their schools and communities, and the NHS Scholarship is NASSP’s way of recognizing the most exceptional of these student leaders. Recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated work to support the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Mika-Lyn has logged over 200 service hours to a variety of organizations in her community while at Wortham High School. These have included Caritas, Mini-Cheer Camp, Volleyball, Vacation Bible School, and other school organizations. Wotham’s NHS Chapter Advisor, Katherine Havens, said “ I have been an NHS Advisor in a couple of schools for over 10 years, and Mika-Lyn is my second student to receive a National NHS scholarship! I am very proud of her and all of the hard work that she has put into our organization.”
Mika-Lyn Gargis currently serves as Wortham’s NHS President. This fall, Garis plans to attend Texas A&M University and study psychology.
Congratulations Mika-Lyn!
