Wortham ISD was locked down after a firearm was allegedly discharged behind the school’s baseball fields and track.


The Wortham Police Department received a call around 2:20 p.m. on February 13, 2020 for a suspicious person who had possibly fired a shot at some dogs, according to an official press release.


While the complainant was at their recently sold house with the Realtor and two repairmen the dogs began to bark.


They went to see what had happened and the complainant explained they saw a white male wearing a tan colored coat and a faded orange beanie walking on the road approximately 50 to 60 yards away.


The complainant reported they heard a gunshot come from the direction of the man they observed on the road, and that the man then allegedly disappeared into the woods.


Wortham ISD was contacted at this time to lockdown until the situation was considered safe.


The Freestone County Sheriff’s Office was then contacted for assistance to search the surrounding area.


The man was not located during the search, but according to the report it is believed that this is an isolated incident.


As per the report, no threat direct made to the school or anyone associated with the school.


Freestone County Sheriff’s Office, Mexia Police Department and DPS all responded to help secure the area and provide security for the school.
