Members of the Wortham High School National Honor Society (NHS) and Student Council (STUCO) visited the State Capitol in Austin on March 20, 2019.  The students spent the day touring the Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, and the visitor’s center.

During the Capitol visit, several of the senators and representatives met with the members.

Senator Schwertner came off of the senate floor to speak to the students and answer all of their questions including how he got started in politics and how they could become a page.  The students were also able to go onto the Senate floor and see the political process in action because both houses were in session.

While observing the House, Representative Harris recognized the group from the floor and had them stand up and be acknowledged while watching from the gallery.

One of the more interesting activities they were able to witness was the actual voting process.  Several bills were up for vote during the visit, and the students were able to see first-hand how these are voted into law.

The students also toured the Governor’s Mansion and played fetch with the Abbott’s dog Peaches.

“Overall, this was a very educational trip, and this makes me want to be more involved in politics and the voting process,” according to Ben Havens, STUCO member.

The NHS sponsor is Katherine Havens, and the STUCO sponsors are Joel Barnett and Jennifer Paden.
