The National Honor Society (NHS) is excited to announce that Benjamin Havens, a senior at Wortham High School and member of NHS has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist.  Havens was chosen from nearly 10,000 applicants and will receive a $3,200 scholarship toward higher education.  He is one of 575 receiving this award.

Since 1946, more than $19 million in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding NHS senior members to support college access and student success.  The scholarship program is supported by the parent organization of NHS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).  In the 100 years since NHS was founded in 1921, members have been making a difference in their schools and communities, and the NHS Scholarship is NASSP’s way of recognizing the most exceptional of these student leaders.  Recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated work to support the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Benjamin has logged over 400 service hours to a variety of organizations in his community while at Wortham High School.  These have included volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America, tutoring students virtually during the pandemic, and working concession stands for the Wortham Band Boosters.  Wotham’s Chapter Advisor, Katherine Havens, said «I have been an NHS advisor in a couple of schools for over 10 years, and Benjamin is my first student to receive a National NHS scholarship.  I am very proud of him and all of the hard work that he has put into our organization.”  Benjamin Havens currently serves as Wortham’s NHS President.  This fall, Havens plans to attend the University of Texas at Arlington and study engineering.
