The Wortham Bulldogs baseball team has been successful this season and is one win away from an unbeaten district record. They clinched the district title last week but are trying to keep a zero in the loss column.
It got a bit dicey Friday in Mart when the Panthers jumped out to an 8-1 lead after two innings. The Bulldogs could have cashed it in and kept the district title but battled back to take the lead and the win 19-9.
Michael McGlone took the mound and struggled early and gave way to senior Braxton Whaley and he pitched a gem allowing only one run over the remaining five innings.
Trailing 8-1 and the Bulldogs heading to the plate, Wortham scored eight runs and regained the lead. Anthony Perez was hit by a pitch and Whaley single to left center field. Dylan Martin was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded.
Whaley scored on a fielding error and Brandon Coker walked in a run. Following a pitching change, Cade McCoslin ripped a 2RBI single up the middle, scoring Lane Zapien and Ryan Mao. Hunter Waggener loaded the bases when he became the third batter hit by a pitch. McGlone had a single up the middle to drive in two more to complete the inning.
Wortham added three more in the top half of the fourth inning. Coker singled and scored Mao and McCoslin had his third run batted in in the game with a bloop single to left and Waggener followed with a run scoring single.
The Bulldogs added four insurance runs in the sixth inning.
The Wortham Bulldogs finish the district season at home against Hubbard and then head to the playoffs.
