“Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit; let the earth cause them both to sprout; I the Lord have created it.” The prophet Isaiah wrote this passage to describe the blessings that god pours out upon his people like a mighty rain storm. Now where did we see something like that recently?
This past Sunday at First Methodist we were raising joys and concerns to the congregation (a practice we have every Sunday). One of the first requests made was for rain! And to be honest, that has been a request for sometime now. Many of us have been crying out to God to quench our parched land and this past Sunday was no exception. But then the rain that came from the heavens was so much more than we could have expected, it was a Divine Deluge.
The definition of a deluge is, “to inundate with a great quantity of something.” In our case it was raining this past weekend (some folks counted six to seven inches in their rain gauges). But there were also some other blessed particulars in which we could see God’s handiwork in this downpour. Of course rain is a natural occurrence, and many will attribute this precipitation as nothing more than the combination of weather forces at work. But who put the forces into motion?
Think about this, the rain on Sunday came at a time of day in which the water would not evaporate from the sun. It came with clouds that obliterated the oppressive heat which allowed the ground to soak up the moisture. And then it rained all the way until late in the evening, ensuring even more water would not evaporate. In other words, it was truly a perfect rain storm and it covered practically all of Freestone County.
Don’t you love it when God steps in at the perfect time and in the perfect way? And yes, I know the heat will be back in a few days and our rain chances are looking slim for this week. But you know what? I’m just going to rest in this moment of quenched thirst and enjoy the miracles God provided in the right moment.
Christ’s grace is poured out on this world like rain each day, let’s bask in that deluge as well. Thank you Lord for the rain!
