Verlyn Loy Newberry, of Fairfield (formerly of Mexia) passed away January 11, 2022. She was born on February 4, 1932 in Cuero, Texas to Alvin and Amanda (Ruschhaupt) Schorlemer. She had one brother, Alvin Schorlemer Jr.
Loy received Texas Educator Certifications in 1955 to teach Secondary 6-12 and Vocational Home Economics 6-12 from Southwest Texas State in San Marcos TX.
She received her Masters in Home Economics from Texas Women’s University in 1970.
Loy started her teaching career in Rockport, TX. where she met her future husband, James Newberry. After marrying James in 1956, she moved to Mexia where she taught Home Economics for 40 years in Mexia, Groesbeck and finishing her educational career in Teague. One of the highlights of her career was serving on the National Board of Home Economics Educators. She retired from education in 1994.
Shortly after the death of her husband, Loy moved to Fairfield. There she was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Fairfield participating in Sunday School as well as serving in many areas throughout the church until the time of her death. She was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association of Freestone County as well as Freestone Quilt Guild, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Loy loved spending time with her family and was a lifelong fan of the Texas Aggies, Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. She would actively engage in sports conversation utilizing her knowledge and love of the games.
She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents and her brother.
She is survived by her daughter Cyndi Plant and wife, Vonda Posey of Carrollton; son, Scott Newberry and wife Carolyn, of Fairfield; granddaughter Amanda Forrest and husband Benjamin Forrest of Dallas; and two grandsons, Kyle Newberry and his wife Ashley Newberry of Arlington; and J. Newberry of Fairfield.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield with Rev. Richard Heyduck officiating. A visitation with the family will be held at the church, following the service.
