“I have often said that with sidecar ownership comes the responsibility to give back to the community around us,” says Kent Silk (above, right), owner of Texas Sidecar Company in Teague.
Sidecars are special in that they allow rides to people who would not otherwise have an opportunity to ride. It’s like “Make a Wish” or maybe a “last ride” for someone. Sidecar owners around the world have been called to assist and they answer the call every time one is requested.
On Friday, June 28, 2024, Texas Sidecar Company got the opportunity to fulfill a wish for Gerald (above, left), a wheelchair bound gentleman from the Groesbeck area.
When Chaplin Luke, who visits very special people, visited Gerald, he was told “I have never been on a motorcycle ride,” and decided to make that wish come true for Gerald.
Chaplin Luke visited with Mr. Silk to see if they would be able to accommodate a person in a wheelchair for a ride in a sidecar because Gerald cannot be easily transferred, so he would need to ride while still in his wheelchair.
“I have a wheelchair sidecar for just such occasions,” explained Mr. Silk. “So off I went on my Texas Ranger with the chariot.”
Mr. Silk took Gerald on several loops around Lake Mexia and “Gerald had the largest smile on his face,” he says.
Many family members, such as Gerald’s brother-in-law and nieces and nephews, were there to cheer him on.
Since 1955, Gerald has been in the care of group homes for his needs. He enjoys drawing, fishing and special outings. Now we can add Sidecar riding to his list of enjoyments.
Gerald’s usual demeaner is with his head lowered, but not on this day. He sat high in his chair and even waved a couple of times. When asked if he enjoyed the ride, he gave a cheerful and long “YEAH!”
“The blessings and heart-felt warmth that all of us received from Gerald is more than we gave him,” explains Mr. Silk. “I’m smiling now just remembering the sound of his voice and the look on his face. Sidecars are Fun!”
