According to Vaisala Xweather’s (a global technology company) annual report, Teague, Texas was named the lightning capital of the United States with approximately 1,903 strikes per square mile in 2024.
Coming in second was Orlando, Florida with 1,072 strikes per square mile.
Texas dominated the report, with 40.4 million lightning strikes in 2024, which was more than the next three states combined.
The report states that increased activity was tied to an uptick in thunderstorms seen during the spring, with May 22, 2024, determined as the busiest day of activity with more than 3.1 million lightning events.
The report goes on to discuss the effect of lightning events on air travel, causing many flights to be cancelled or delayed; as well as wind turbines being one of the most frequently lightening-struck items.
