Teague ISD retired Sergeant Major James Gregory Ryan Sartor’s jersey, #84, at a ceremony held during Teague’s Pep Rally.
Sgt. Maj. Sartor graduated from Teague ISD in 1997, and had enjoyed playing football during his years with Teague.
Many were in attendance, including his wife and three children, family, friends, fellow soldiers, and members of the community.
Among the gathering were men wearing olive shirts, and on the back of these shirts where the words, “Men look up to Green Berets – Green Berets look up to Ryan Sartor…”
Clint Skinner of Teague, Texas graduated with Sartor in 1997. They were friends, classmates and team mates.
During a very emotional speech Skinner spoke of how Sartor was a, “Respected leader who would ask you to do something he wouldn’t do himself.”
Skinner also said how, “Our children and families are what we are most proud of.”


Teague ISD head coach, Donnie Osborn, honored Sartor’s wife and children with a framed #84 jersey for them to keep.
The High School will also be hanging a #84 jersey to keep Sartor’s memory alive inside his alma mater.
Sgt. Maj. Sartor was killed in action during service to the United States July 13, 2019 in Faryab Province, Afghanistan. He was a husband, father, Green Beret and a career soldier.
He was Sergeant Major of A Co, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Fort Carson, Colorado.
Sartor’s awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster and National Defense Service Medal, among others. He has been posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal and Bronze Star medal.
Sartor also had earned the Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, where he earned the title of Honor Grad, Combat Infantryman Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Special Operations Diver Badge and Dive Supervisor Badge.
