A.J. Mikeska has been nominated as a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2020 Students of the Year campaign.
This is a seven-week initiative in which nominated high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit the LLS Central Texas – Austin Chapter.
A.J. is one of twenty-three students competing in this year’s Student of the Year 2020 Austin chapter for a $2,500 scholarship. If A.J. raises the most donations, he will receive the $2,500 scholarship to the college of his choice.
Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Leukemia is the number one most diagnosed form of childhood cancer.
The goal for this program is to raise awareness and donations to help fund research and ultimately find a cure for blood cancers.
“I became involved with this campaign because I have always wanted to help people but never really knew where to start,” says Mikeska. “I think this is a great opportunity for me to help others and learn more about LLS.”
Mikeska is the son of Sherry Fagan, formerly of Fairfield, Texas. He is currently a Freshman at Liberty Hill High School.
“I am so excited for A.J. to have this incredible opportunity to learn, grow and serve through this unique leadership development program,” says Fagan. “A.J. has been challenged to connect with influential business leaders within our community and I immediately thought of our friends and family in Freestone County!”
The campaign will run from January 8 thru February 28, 2020.
