Fairfield Lake State Park will be closed to all visitors for Drawn Hunts on the following dates:
–December 26th (beginning at 5:00 p.m.) thru December 31st (ending at 1:00 p.m.)
–January 4th (beginning at 5:00 p.m.) thru January 7th (ending at 1:00 p.m.)
To conserve and manage public wildlife and habitat resources, public hunts will be conducted at Fairfield Lake State Park.
“This year our biologist recommended antlerless/spike rifle only and unlimited feral hogs,” said Kate Sherman, office manager at Fairfield Lake State Park. “We did 2 youth hunts and one adult hunt.”
These management activities also provide low cast recreational hunting opportunities for Texans.
If anyone is interested in signing up for next year opportunities will open this summer at https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/public_hunt_drawing/
“We are not the only park that provides this opportunity either,” Sherman continued. “Many other State Parks and Wildlife Management Areas provide all sorts of hunting experiences from deer and waterfowl to exotics and big horn sheep! This same link can be used to sign up for those hunts.”
Hunting is a vital wildlife management tool.
“Sometimes we get asked why we do these hunts,” she said. “It keeps nature at a healthy balance of which the available habitat can support. For many wildlife species, hunting also helps to maintain populations at levels compatible with human activity and land use. To put it simply, hunting = A healthy park and healthy animals. And we are all about that!”
These hunts will be conducted during the periods listed above, and park access will be limited to persons participating in these hunts.
