Puppy’s hearts beating in utero brought a look of amazement and probably an audible “WOW” from my mouth last week while checking out the new ultrasound equipment at Fairfield Veterinary Hospital.

Testing out their new ultrasound equipment is Dr. James Roush of Fairfield Veterinary Hospital. (Submitted Photo)

I have never been happier to have a mask on than I was that day as my mouth kept gapping open in happy shock and wonder while Dr. James Roush showed me what this little machine could do!

The machine is a Mindray TE7. It is portable and comes equipped with an extra screen that allows for Telehealth conferencing with a person who is able to be seen and actively watch what is happening.
They can even direct the person taking the ultrasound to do exact techniques or show them exactly what is necessary.

Another reason this is amazing is because it allows the Hospital to have access to specialists in a variety of fields, meaning our precious pets get better health care.

Normally, you would need to travel to at least Waco, if not farther, for this kind of care.

The machine itself allows for monitoring of tumors and growths, including measuring them, to keep an eye on the animal’s health.
It allows checking an animal’s gestational stage, to see when it is time to bring the babies into the world.

That is just a few things. It does so much more, even monitor heart conditions with an EKG.

During my visit I was able to see amazing things, some great to see, some not as much. Yet the ability to see what is going on was impressive.

I was able to view a gall stone, a tumor in a bladder along with how size was measured, and even puppies still in their mommy were clearly visible.

These were recordings; I was not allowed to see anything live during the visit.

This machine even allows them to snap pictures and view them side by side to make comparisons, or share with other veterinarians and clinics.

While it is not necessary to sedate an animal, sometimes sedation is used to keep the animal calm. Sometimes it only takes them about ten minutes, and more in depth views can be thirty minutes.

Plus, this can help keep cost down with quick and easy checks only costing $40 and a full work up for $150. This is substantial savings when compared to $500 to $700 an exploratory surgery can cost.

All in all, this is a great addition to veterinarian care right here in Fairfield, Texas, and it was an amazing experience for this reporter.
