A Streetman man is recovering from gunshot wounds following an incident that occurred Friday morning, August 9, 2024.

Just before 1:00 a.m. that morning, Freestone County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a report of a shooting with injuries on Wood Street in Streetman.

According to the Peace Officers Sworn Affidavit, FCSO Deputies Aultman and Leatherman, Sgt. Darby, Sgt. Investigator Weinman, Fairfield PD Officer Scarrow, and Fairfield EMS Medic 7, responded to the address.

Upon arrival, first responders found the victim, Cody Williamson, 42, lying on the floor in his living room, bleeding with three gunshot wounds: one to the lower right side of his stomach, one to the back of his left shoulder, and another to his left hip.

According to the affidavit, Williamson told law enforcement that his neighbor, William Chalmers, 52, shot him with a handgun.

While EMS was with Williamson, deputies went outside to look for Chalmers, who was found in his own yard. He was told to put his hands up and walk toward deputies. He complied, was arrested, and found to have blood on his chest and nose.

Chalmers stated that he had been attacked when he and Williamson got into a fight.

EMS called for Air Evac and Williamson was air lifted to a trauma hospital in Tyler. He has since undergone surgery and is in stable condition.

Chalmers was examined by EMS and transported to Fairfield Hospital with a broken nose and broken ankle. He was later released to law enforcement, transported to Freestone County Jail, and booked for Attempted Murder, a First-Degree Felony.

According to a social media post by Sheriff Jeremy Shipley, “a search warrant was obtained for the suspect’s residence and the weapon believed to be used in the attack was located.”

“It was learned that there had been a physical altercation prior to the shooting,” explains Sheriff Shipley. “The suspect had charged the victim on the victim’s property, causing a physical altercation. The victim called 911 to report it and then he went back inside his residence. The suspect then knocked on the victim’s door and opened fire when the victim opened it.”

Sheriff Shipley goes on to say, “Additionally, it was learned that the suspect was a convicted felon and had several military-style ballistic vests in his possession.”

In addition to the Attempted Murder charge, Chalmers has been charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and three counts of Unlawful Possession of Body Armor by Felon, all Third-Degree Felonies.

Magistrate Theresa Farris, JP-1, set bond at $600,000 for the Attempted Murder. The other four charges had smaller bond amounts set at well.

This incident is still under investigation.
