County Judge Linda Grant signed a Declaration first thing on Thursday morning, June 30, 2000 to prohibit the sale and use of restricted fireworks in Freestone County.
The restriction is ordered due to the extremely dry and hazardous conditions in the area.
Violating this ban could result in a Class C misdemeanor by a fine of up to $1,000 and confinement in jail for up to 180 days, a stipulation adopted in Freestone County’ emergency plan.
Restricted fireworks are classified by the Texas Government Code as “skyrockets with sticks” and “missiles with fins.”
Commercial fireworks displays are allowed, so long as they are done by a professional company that is bonded and insured.
The Fireworks Show planned at the fairgrounds in Fairfield will continue, as the City of Fairfield uses a professional company that is both bonded and insured.
”We are taking precautions and the fire department will be there,” said Fairfield City Administrator Nate Smith. They will also have barricades up so that spectators do not get too close to the fireworks display.
The fireworks ban will remain in place for the next 7 days, unless commissioners take further action.
