Whenever I go down to give Sundance carrots and brush her or just visit with her, she is always the envy of the cows…at least that is what I think. The Yearling Herd stands around staring at her and when I hand her a carrot they get real curious. She talks to them and talks to me over and over. When I first show up, she talks a blue streak as if she is so glad to see me. Then she looks at the cows and talks to them. Sometimes they walk off and sometimes they just stare. They will also sometimes take a few steps toward her and me trying to see just exactly what I am doing to the “Leader of the Pack”, or in this case, the Herd! Even the little calves will get up and watch the activities, especially if I am brushing her. Seldom do the cows walk off unless Sundance decides to walk off first and that has happened on occasions. Then they follow her as if the show is over!
The Middle herd does basically the same thing when Lucinda comes up to us. Lucinda is almost 2 years old now Her mother died giving birth to her. We brought her up to the corral and raised her until she was able to go out and mix with the herd. She still remembers us and whenever she sees our trucks, Lucinda comes over to have her head and neck scratched. The cows and the Bulls look on as if this is some sort of magic thing going on. Their faces sometimes look as if they are thinking…what are they doing to her and why did she walk up to them?
Some curious cows reside at the Red Oak Ranch!
