We had a simply lovely evening tonight. It was too hot to sit on the porch, so we lingered over the supper table. We do that a lot; over the breakfast table, over the supper table, and when we take a break table! We consider it a wonderful but also a necessary thing to do…talking to each other about everything and nothing. It doesn’t matter what else we must do for the day; we take time to just talk.
This evening at supper the conversation was about a movie that The Colonel watched that was very interesting. He told me all about…as I don’t watch much TV because it interferes with my reading. When he was finished, I found myself wishing I had taken the time to watch the movie because it was so interesting. Of course, it could have been interesting just because of the way he told me about it. It had good actors, lots of action, lots of family stuff going on. One of the good things about The Colonel is he will remember this movie years from now. Then we got to talking about how life was when we were growing up. Funny stories, interesting stories, just good family memories.
He remembered going to see his grandparents who lived in Alabama. His parents sent him and his sister, Barbara, on the train. They were young children traveling alone but it was a different time. Their grandpa took them for a ride in the wagon and when they got ready to go back up the mountain to the house where Grandma and Grandpa lived, the mules didn’t want to go. Grandpa yelled at the mules and still they wouldn’t go. He got off the wagon, grabbed the ear of a mule and bit it! Got back in the wagon and slapped the reins. This time the mules took off so fast that The Colonel and Barbara were afraid the wagon would turn over! Good memories are held in high regard at the Red Oak Ranch.
