The cows know his name and they came to his call. Saturday night we were supposed to have a terrible storm with hail, winds, rain, etc.
The cows had been locked up in the North East Pasture where there is not a lot of places to get in out of the rain. In fact, the only place is down in the Sweet Gum Grove which always floods so that’s no good.
The Colonel didn’t want them to have to bear the brunt of a bad storm, so he went down to that pasture around 10:00 p.m. I worried they wouldn’t move in the dark, but he went anyway.
He opened the gate, gave them his special call, and then got out of the way. They came in a straight line with their babies.
They didn’t go on a mission to see if he was giving them cubes or meal or any other treat in the feeder. That was a good thing because he wasn’t giving them anything. They came up to the fence around the yard and stood at attention. They didn’t know exactly what they were supposed to do. The Colonel took his flashlight and waved it over his head telling them to go to the Personal Grove for cover.
They marched on as if they understood what he was doing. They went into the Grove and stayed there for a while. They were very quiet while they waited, I suppose for the storm that didn’t show. However, if it had, they and their babies would have been safe.
The Colonel came in the house with a look of amazement on his face that they understood what he was doing and played their part in the adventure. The Red Oak Ranch has some smart cows!
