Stoneshire, THE bull at the Red Oak Ranch, died this past week. Stoneshire was only 10 years old, which a lot of ranchers probably think that is old. Stoneshire was sweet, gentle, and fun to be with. If we were in the truck, he would come up to the window, stick his head in and wait for The Colonel to pet his head. Even though Stoneshire was a very large bull, I was never afraid of him. I knew he wouldn’t do anything to me.
We have SOS to fill in for the main herd and Maverick to be with the Yearling herd. Maverick has a distinctive “eagle” on his side. Some how the cows have been able to stand the heat wave we have experienced. They did better than Sundance has done. I can tell she has had a bad day because her face is all wet as well as her legs. I put my hand under her mane and her skin was hot!
Hopefully, when the weather turns cooler, it won’t be cold! I’m not sure whether I should go ahead and plant some flowers or just wait. I am a little bit leery of the weather. I lost my rose bushes and most everything else. But that is the way weather works. Nothing we can do about the cold or the hot of the seasons. Red Oak Ranch seems to be coming out of the pastures being without much grass. The ranch will just keep going on!
