Oh, my goodness! It is so hot around here the only thing moving fast are Hummingbirds! They are eating, fighting, flying like crazy and don’t appear to notice the heat. The cows and the horse are still grazing but they are also taking long breaks under the trees. The lake is down considerably but the ponds are still holding full. I suppose we should have known this was going to happen by the way the wind has not stopped blowing since Spring.
I read an article the other day that stated all kinds of bugs, spiders, and scorpions were starting to move into houses as they are looking for cool places also. This morning I found a scorpion in the utility room. I whacked him twice and then flushed him down the drain! I do not like scorpions at all and have no guilt about getting rid of one. I have been stung twice by one and I hope never again. Our poor Beagles are digging to China trying to find a hole that has cool dirt! No matter how much we water these holes for them, with the wind and heat they dry out pretty fast.
Talking with a man at church this morning that was telling the same tales we were about the heat and how badly we need rain. He is a rancher too so we could relate to a lot of his concerns. The end of the conversation was him saying, “You know what? Come January and we will all be saying, ‘I will be so glad when Summer gets here’ ”! Even with the brown grass and the low lake, the Red Oak Ranch is still a beautiful place.
