The freeze finally came and so winter is here! At least we don’t have to go all the way to the back of the West 50. It is backed up by open land and if it is windy the wind always will find you trying to get to the cows to feed them. But we decided to close that area off and just have to be out in the wind and cold with feeding only two herds (we sold the East 50). I can remember my fingers being so cold I couldn’t feel them.
Some how I knew the cows over there would have to be fed and it was my job to do so. Then I would beat it home, and warm up!
Fingers and feet seem to always get cold first. But I think it does tame the cows down a bit. Yes, they are hungry and want to be fed right then but they aren’t fighting among the herd. The best part is seeing the little calves covered up with hay and only their little heads sticking out. For those who think cows and calves are stupid, think about it. They know to get covered up to stay warm. Hopefully this winter will go easy on Texas.
Merry Christmas to all, from the folks at the Red Oak Ranch.
