This past week I was out in the yard picking up twiglets that had fallen, leaves that had died and blew around in the yard, etc. Vines are taking over the yard fence and as I was looking at them, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted calves.
The calves came running from out of nowhere, just as fast as they could run. At first I thought they were having a race but then I saw some of them kicking up their heels, practically skidding to a stop and standing still, just doing all kinds of things little boys and girls might be doing. I actually thought I saw one of them smiling. Three of them were approximately the same age and size. The other four were a little smaller but they gave it all they had in the thrill of being with their group!
The Momma cows just stood where they were and watched the calves. I couldn’t tell if they were upset that their “baby” had busted loose like that or if they were happy to see their babies, or if they were trying to decide what in the world was going on. It was something they didn’t appear to be able to figure out. The calves calmed down a little bit, some even appeared to be ready to rest for a little bit. The older ones evidently caught their breath and started off around the Personal Grove while the younger ones kept resting. It seemed the race was over. Just another pleasant day at the Red Oak Ranch.
