When dogs and horses get use to something, no matter what it is, they have this attachment to the food, bed, treats, water, etc. And, if they are pampered, it is even worse. I suppose it is no worse than a husband or wife having an attachment; except, you might be able to convince the husband or wife to at least check out something new. But with dogs or horses, they don’t really understand what you are doing if you change one little thing they are attached to.
Our Beagles, MO and Tasha like a certain dog food; beef flavored. Sundance, my horse, likes her oats in a certain spot. Don’t set the tub down in a different spot, she will search all over for her oats. She even will walk by them and act like she is surprised. The Beagles are not that sophisticated. They will meet you at the door with their food, follow you over to their feeding table and watch you put the warm water in their bowls. When you set the bowls down on the patio, that’s when they get upset. We could not find the beef flavor last time and so we got the chicken flavored. They both walked up to their bowls, sniff the food, and then walked away from it. So, I thought I could add some ham to their food. They ate the ham and left the rest. Then I decided to put some beef broth in the food. Same thing…walked away. They got so upset they wouldn’t even eat a treat. I told them they would just have to do without eating for the night.
Guess where I am headed tomorrow…yep, to the store and hopefully I can find some beef flavored food for the Beagles of the Red Oak Ranch.
