The other day I took oats down to Sundance and talked to her and petted her while she ate. She is very gentle and doesn’t mind being petted while eating. I am not real sure how long this went on, but I know she enjoyed the petting and especially the oats. She turns around when she wants the other side petted, although she has a favorite side.
Sundance and I were having a very good time when I heard The Colonel’s truck coming our way. Not only did I hear the truck, but I heard Sundance talking to him as if The Colonel were another horse. She whinnied and shook her head and whinnied again. I said to The Colonel, she is talking to you so come say hello. Well, he enjoyed her “talking” to him but he didn’t have time to come talk to her. Off he went, and Sundance watched him until he was out of sight.
I have to admit I got a little jealous because, while she talks to me also, she was really making a show out of The Colonel. He didn’t bring oats, he didn’t pet her, he didn’t talk to her but she was really glad to see him. I might just let him start taking her the oats, cleaning out the water tub, cleaning up the stable, etc. Just kidding of course. Oh, well the Red Oak Ranch is a great place for horses whether they talk to you or not.
