MO and Tasha were losing their minds barking at something.  I looked out the window and saw about a gazillion buzzards (maybe not that many but a lot of them!) down on the fence line in the North East Pasture.  I got the binoculars and looked down where they were gathered and saw a little bit of brown and white colors.  I knew it was a calf they had.   But the mystery was that there were also buzzards on the gate, up in a tree, and farther down on the fence.  I couldn’t figure out why there would be so many and why they would be so scattered.  I wondered if maybe it was a group of older buzzards teaching younger ones.  I was thinking of everything to try and figure the mystery out.
I needed to go to town and The Colonel was going to go down, make sure it was a calf and then bury it if it was indeed a calf.  I left to go to town and had gotten about one to two miles from the house when my cell phone rang.  It was The Colonel; he said, “We’ve got a problem here.  There is a cow, dead laying in the middle of the pond”!  I turned around and came back home.  We couldn’t see the cow from the house because of the brush around the pond, but that explained why the buzzards were on the gate.  It could be that dogs or coyotes got the calf and that something else scared the cow and as she ran, whatever it was got her.
The Colonel got the bulldozer and began the ugly task of burying the remains of the calf and the cow.   It was not a good day at The Red Oak Ranch.
