What a surprise was awaiting me last week when I stepped out on the front porch!  I was going out in the morning to fill upreflections_0928 my Hummingbird Feeders.  I had been up early as usual and had waited for it to get light outside.  Everything was ready; I had my container of water to wash out the feeders, the paper towels to dry them off, and my container of feed.
We have a glass top table that sits outside the front door on the porch.  I have my Christmas Cactus on the table and another planter filled with artificial flowers. I opened the front door, then the storm door, and started to step out, in fact I took a half step outside when I saw my surprise!  Partly lying on the table top, with the rest of its body being curled up in the artificial flowerpot was a Copperhead snake.  I very quickly and very quietly stepped back inside and closed the storm door as gently as I could.  I did not want the snake to suddenly crawl off and me not know where its new location was.
I walked into the bedroom and gently, in a very soft voice woke The Colonel up out of a sound sleep with, “Honey, I’m sorry to wake you up but there is a snake on the table….oh outside, the table outside.”  I had suddenly thought he might have thought I meant in the kitchen or dining room.  He got up and walked to the front door, opened the storm door and I was so grateful the snake was still there.  I wondered if the thing had died because he heard The Colonel was coming!  The Colonel had his gun but of course couldn’t shoot the snake on the tabletop and so he was using a stick to try and throw it off the table.  The snake acted as if he were going to go back inside the flowerpot but fortunately, The Colonel got him off the table in to the grass where he dispatched him!  He told me it was a baby and I replied with, oh no, where is its momma and poppa?  I am not convinced it was a baby one though.  The Red Oak Ranch and its critters!!
