The invasion of June Bugs before June even gets here has started again. Every year it seems they come earlier and earlier. If we open a door to go outside probably at least two June Bugs will get in. They hide out after first arriving too, plus they also like to play possum and then when you aren’t looking, they turn over and buzz off.
SAM, THE BEAGLE of the Red Oak Ranch, rest his soul, use to get under the yard light because he liked to eat June Bugs. We never were able to break him of that habit. I am beginning to think he did us a service because the bugs didn’t seem to be as many as there are now. Neither MO nor Tasha eat them, they do however, like to play with them. I have seen Tasha roll one over with her paw and then watch as it zooms off. MO flips them up in the air. When the bugs hit the screens, it sounds as if there are a million of them outside. They end up in the Beagles water bowls and the Beagles are very particular about their water. They want fresh water with nothing in it except maybe an ice cube on a hot day. Spoiled, yes, they are!
I am pretty sure the bugs got the first name of June because that’s when they use to come out. I wonder what changed that? Climate Change, COVID, hmmm. I don’t know of any good purpose they serve except maybe to give dogs something to play with. So, maybe I should be grateful that the dogs at the Red Oak Ranch have something outside to play with that doesn’t take batteries.
