We have a bull calf in the corral, and he is getting antsy to get out. We are feeding him horse and mule feed which has molasses in it and of course he is crazy about it. He doesn’t seem to miss his Momma all that much and she doesn’t miss him a lot either. He is approximately 4-5 months old so not a baby-baby.
When I go in to feed him the horse and mule feed, I have to be careful because he is very curious and wants to see what exactly is in the barn. Sometimes when I open the door from the barn into the corral he is already standing there and always looks to the side of me. I think he is looking to see if he could possibly make it through by going on one side or the other of me. So far, I have been able to “talk” him out of trying! There is lots of green grass coming up in the pens and I have noticed he is staying a little longer out there. After such a cold spell with ice and snow, there is a good crop of grass growing like weeds. Everyday it looks as if more grass has come up.
Not being sure exactly when this little guy is going to get out of confinement, I am trying to come up with a nickname for him. So far, this task is not doing so well. I really don’t like to name the bulls that we are not keeping because I know they will be sold and after I give them a name, I get attached to them. So, we are going to have to break him out of confinement quickly! The Red Oak Ranch is home to many a wonder!
