The fields are still standing in water, the cows still want to eat, the wind is blowing like crazy, it is colder than ever going to the back 40 on the tractor….and yet…. we have no choice but to go, go, go! It is a wonder more people around here don’t get pneumonia. You bundle up so much you can hardly get on or off the tractor and then you start sweating and that is an open invitation for at least a cold! But we have been fortunate so far. So, after we spend our time on the tractor feeding the Back Herd and the Middle Herd it is now time to switch gears.
We are feeding the Yearling Herd square bales which includes loading the bales in the back of the pickup. By the time we get them all in we are worn out and sweating yet again. The Yearlings are watching us, and we see they can hardly wait. However, the other day we loaded both trucks because we decided we would also given the Middle Herd some square bales. Maybe we didn’t think that through because The Colonel went one way with his truck, and I went the other way with mine. I fed the Yearlings and Sundance and as usual they start eating on a quad of hay and as soon as I put another one down, they jump to it. As soon as I got done, I pulled out and went to help The Colonel with the bales he had left. The Middle Herd didn’t quite know what to make of it. They had one big round bale and then we threw the square bales out. It is so funny to see several of them run and kick their feet up as if this is the best it has ever been for them!
Then we get back to the ranch house where it is warm, and we are tired and soon it becomes a struggle to stay awake…. but supper still calls at the Red Oak Ranch.
