Write-In Candidates

A Declaration of Write-In Candidacy may be accepted beginning July 20, 2024 until August 19, 2024.

Those declaring for a national or state position will typically file with Texas Secretary of State office. For county positions, such a declaration must be filed with the County Judge.

Such Declarations must be accompanied by either a filing fee, or a nominating petition signed by a certain number of qualified voters.

If filing a petition, 5,000 voter signatures are required for the offices of U.S. States Senator, Railroad Commissioner, Justice for Texas Supreme Court, Judge for Court of Criminal Appeals.

For the office of U.S. States Representative and other district, county, or precinct positions, 500 signatures are required, or 2% of voters (as counted in the most recent gubernatorial general election).

As Freestone County had 6,661 voters cast their ballots in the 2022 election, two percent would require at least 133 valid signatures for a write-in candidacy for a county level position.

It is important to note that a person who was a candidate for office in the Primary Election is ineligible for a place on the list of write-in candidates for that same office in the succeeding general election.
