Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or what some call food stamps, is doing a Pilot Program in Texas to allow for food purchases online.
With many people unable to work during the pandemic, the State of Texas has seen an increase in people needing SNAP benefits.
Starting Wednesday, May 13, 2020, people may use their SNAP benefits online for curbside pickup or delivery,
“This innovative initiative helps provide healthy food to Texas families who need it the most during this challenging time,” said HHS Access and Eligibility Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter. “We’re committed to reducing food insecurity for at-risk Texans.”

Walmart and Amazon are the two stores currently allowing online SNAP purchases; Amazon delivers groceries to your home, although Amazon Fresh is not currently available in Freestone County.
“As we respond to this pandemic, the state of Texas is committed to helping SNAP recipients throughout the state access nutritious food for their families,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “I thank HHSC for launching this new program and for its continued work to help Texans in need while containing the spread of COVID-19.”
HHSC has also temporarily waved application interviews and renewals to help people receive benefits faster and easier with less worry.
Plus, the April and May disbursements have been increased to the maximum amount for the recipient’s family size.
SNAP is still only for purchasing groceries, but this one adjustment can help less people be exposed during the pandemic.
