Former Freestone County law enforcement officer, Virgil “Dusty” Brewer, is expected to stand trial in June for involuntary manslaughter before a District Court in the State of Kansas.
Sixty-year-old Brewer, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 following an unsuccessful attempt to have the case dismissed with a self-defense immunity claim.
Brewer is being tried for the 2017 fatal shooting of Steven Myers, who was forty-two years old at the time of his death.
According to news reports, Brewer was part of a law enforcement response to a 911 report of a drunk and disorderly suspect making threats, possibly with a gun.
During the response, Brewer is said to have discharged bean-bag ammunition with a 12-gauge shotgun. Meyers was pronounced dead at the scene with a shot to the chest.
Lack of proper training and improper use of a less-than-lethal weapon is being cited in this case.
Currently a resident of Kiowa, Brewer has been on unpaid leave with Barber County, Kansas where he served the County as Undersheriff.
The “Times” will continue to follow the case as it goes to trial.
