Fairfield Lake State Park is known for its prodigious bird population.

Bald Eagles call the park home year-round. They also have a variety of ducks, herons, owls, cormorants, skimmers, rails, doves, woodpeckers and more.

Last year, the Park received a grant for the construction of a birding platform for their birdwatching trail.

“We are so excited,” said Kate Sherman, Office Manager at the Fairfield State Park. “We are hoping construction will begin in January or February.”

According to Sherman, the project experienced several delays, but they look to get started with help from their team of Park Host volunteers.

“The birding platform will be located right on the shoreline on our Bird Watching trail,” she said.

“We hope to begin hosting birding programs regularly once it is constructed.

Bird enthusiasts are encouraged to check out the park’s birding list on their next visti. “It is a great tool,” said Sherman, “but is not comprehensive of what has all been spotted here.”

“You never know what you might see passing through,” she continued. “We have been a great stopping point on many birds migrating paths in the fall and spring.”

In fact, according to Sherman, Fairfield Lake State Park had birders come from all over Texas to witness a group of Black Scoters that hung out in the day-use area, before migrating back up to Canada.

“The area our new bird platform is being constructed is a hot spot for all sorts of waterfowl that will be much easier to spot from an elevated platform,” said Sherman. “We are looking forward to what will be discovered here!”

Fairfield Lake State Park is located north east of the Fairfield city limits.
