A special hearing was held in Freestone County in the Dabrett Black versus The State of Texas case on Friday, September 25, 2020.
This hearing was due to Black stating that he had a new attorney, although he had never met them.
Not only had he never met them, but he did not have a name for the attorney, and no other attorney was at the hearing.
District Court Judge Patrick Simmons took time to carefully, and repeatedly, explain to Black that without an Attorney who made themselves known, he did not have another Attorney.
“I strongly recommend you cooperate with them,” Judge Simmons told Black, as he reminded him that his current attorneys are specialized in Capital Murder cases, and that he could be sentenced to death.
Black then attempted to further claim that a family member arranged an attorney but he has had no contact.
Simmons repeated himself again, after Black tried explaining this.
The Judge additionally told Black he needed to cooperate with his Attorneys.
The Judge also stated that, if they send a doctor, Black needs to cooperate with the doctor, along with whatever else the Attorneys say is necessary.
