Last Monday, July 5, 2021 was move in day at the restored jail on the grounds of the Freestone County Historical Museum.
Edward Jackson and his crew at A Weekend Mover did a painstaking job of moving a house full of bulky and fragile antique furniture from the Bass Wing and storage area into the jail building.
This included the original cast iron jail bathtub on wheels from the HC Grandberry family, which they miraculously managed to get upstairs.
“They handled everything with the utmost care,” said Linda Mullen, Museum Board President.
The Sheriff’s living quarters have been staged. “We don’t have his office set up yet, but at least he can rest and enjoy some relaxing music on the 1850’s square grand piano,” continued Mullen.
The piano came from the Marcus Seeley family, who at one time served as a deputy sheriff in Freestone County, Texas.
“Still a lot of work to be done to see the jail restoration completed,” concluded Mullen, “but we have really made a lot of progress.”
