The Malakoff Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised past the Teague Lions at Lion Stadium Friday night. The 35-0 Tiger win evened the Teague district record at 1-1 and 4-2 on the season.
The state ranked Tigers did as they have done all season. They managed to get out front and maintain the lead throughout the contest. The Lions have battled injuries for most of the season and will continue to work through health concerns as they work toward a postseason berth.
Malakoff did get on the board in the first quarter with a 49-yard connection from junior quarterback Mike Jones to his all-state running back Chauncey Hogg. The catch and run put the Tigers on top to stay. The point after was good and the Tigers led 7-0 with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers put on a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Parker Poteete scored on a short touchdown run and Hogg added an eight-yard touchdown run with a minute remaining in the first half. The lead grew to 21-0 heading into the halftime break.
Teague could not get their offense moving in the first moments of the second half and Jerrion Hall scored the first of his two second half touchdowns. The first touchdown was on a three-yard run and the lead moved to 28-0 with eight minutes to go in the third quarter.
Hall added a four-yard touchdown run with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter to set the final score at 35-0.
Malakoff continues to lead the district race at 3-0 with the Groesbeck Goats a half game back at 2-0. Fairfield sits in the third position at 2-1 and Teague is a half-game behind the Eagles at 1-1. The Lions will take to the road next week when they travel to Mexia to take on the
Blackcats in a critical District 8-3A Division I game.
