The Teague Lions jumped to a 14-0 lead and never trailed in a 42-21 win in McGregor over the Bulldogs. Teague improves to 2-1 in district play and face the biggest test of the year on Friday in a home game against Whitney.
The Lions took the Bulldogs out of the game in all phases early and never looked back in the win. An early McGregor punt was taken by Drew Satterwhite and he weaved through the Bulldog coverage team on a 30-yard return and the Lion offense went to work at the McGregor 37. Nemier Herod took the first two plays with a sweep to the right and the left and then Ty Abram had a bruising run to the eight. Herod finished off the drive with a four-yard run for the early lead. Roberto Escobedo made the first of six extra points and a Lion 7-0 lead.
Teague forced another three and out and took over at midfield. Satterwhite took a direct snap on the first play and ran 29 yards to the Bulldog 21. That drive concluded with Abram running it in for a touchdown on the two-yard blast for the 14-0 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
McGregor finished the first quarter and put points on the board in the beginning of the second quarter. Bulldog quarterback Veandre McDaniel hit Caleb Carmichael across the middle for a 30-yard gain into the Teague side of the field. McDaniel put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 12-yard pass to Dayton Threadgill for the touchdown. Hector Aviles added the extra point and the Lion lead was cut in half at 14-7.
The Lions wasted no time to answer the score. Freshman quarterback Jake Callahan lofted a pass that looked like it overthrew Satterwhite, but he found another gear and ran under the pass for a 63-yard pass play and the 21-7 lead.
The Bulldogs took over seven minutes off the clock on the next scoring drive and Threadgill scored his second of the night on a two-yard run. The running of McDaniel and Threadgill moved the Bulldogs downfield and the score came with just under four minutes remaining in the half.
McGregor tried an on-side kick on the next play and offensive lineman Andrew Perez made a tremendous play on the ball and covered it for the Lions. It took only two minutes to score on the 53-yard drive with Herod tallying his second scored on the night and a 28-14 lead at the half.
The Lions had the ball to open the second half and moved downfield easily. Callahan hit Satterwhite for an apparent 59-yard touchdown but a flag was thrown on Satterwhite for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the points were negated. The score was as phantom as the call since no one saw what Satterwhite did not warrant the flag. Herod would score a couple of minutes later on a nine-yard run for the 35-14 lead.
The Teague defense had taken over the game and McGregor could not move the ball offensively and Teague started at the 25. Callahan dumped a pass to Juan Bernal and he did the rest, turning it into a 50-yard gain to the Bulldog 25. Satterwhite scored on the next play when Callahan threw to the back corner and Satterwhite made a basket catch for the 21-yard score and a 42-14 lead.
McGregor would add a late touchdown to set the final score of 42-21.
Grandview and Whitney continue to lead the district with Teague and West trailing. McGregor has two losses and Maypearl and Groesbeck appear to be playing out of the race. Teague will host Whitney in an important district game on Friday.
