The Teague Lions scored with just over a minute to go in the game and held off the Groesbeck Goats 22-20 to stay in the chase for the district championship.
Teague is one game back of Malakoff for the district lead and the Lions are tied with the West Trojans, but the Trojans hold the tiebreaker. Eustace, Whitney and Groesbeck are all at 2-3 with two games left and each will play each other during that time.
After a scoreless first quarter, Daveon Dixon picked off Groesbeck quarterback Ty Hale on the first play of the second quarter at the Goat 40-yard line. Teague quarterback Zach Satterwhite dropped to pass and hit Tyrese Heard across the middle for the 40-yard score. Roberto Escobedo added the extra point for the 7-0 lead with 11:38 remaining in the half.
On the ensuing kickoff, Ethan Davis scooped up the ball and got behind his blockers and went from the far sideline and up the near sideline for the 84-yard kickoff return. It took only 16 seconds for the Goats to tie the score at 7-7.
During the second quarter, the Goats drove down into Lion territory but failed on a fourth down and the Lions took over at their own 29-yard line. Teague drove downfield and reached the Groesbeck five-yard line and Coleman fumbled and the Goat defense recovered.
Just before the halftime break, the Lions were moving efficiently and Satterwhite tossed a touchdown pass to Antonio Heard for a 30-yard score and the 14-7 halftime lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, Groesbeck could close the gap with 7:41 remaining in the game. Ty Hale pushed through for a one-yard run. Dylan Rand line up to attempt the tying extra point, but it sailed wide left and the Lions held onto a one-point lead at 14-13.
That lead would hold until just over a minute to play in the game. Daveon Dixon scored on a 26-yard run and it was decision time for the Teague coaching staff. The Lions offense came onto the field and Satterwhite tossed to Azaya Patrick to set the lead to two scores at 22-13.
The Groesbeck Goats move downfield fast and scored with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Hale hit Brandyn Canady across the middle for a 25-yard touchdown and Rand added the point after to slice the lead to 22-20.
The on sides kick failed and the Lions were able to run out the clock.
This week should see some movement in the district race. Teague will host the fourth ranked Malakoff Tigers and with a win could take over the top seed for the playoffs. West will host last place Palestine Westwood. Groesbeck will be on the road to Elkhart and Eustace will travel to Whitney in a battle featuring two of the teams tied for the final playoff spot.
